What I Watched Last Night: The Beast

The BeastWith all the recent hype on Patrick Swayze and his illness, I knew as a TV blogger that I couldn't miss out on what could very well be his last project.  I hope that doesn't sound too harsh, but let's face it...it's true.

I didn't have the highest of hopes but I figure I'll take anything that attempts to fill that "The Shield" sized hole in my heart.  After watching last night, I think "Damages" is still the only front runner in that department.

It's not that it was awful. It was more...painfully awkward.  We kept checking to make sure we hadn't missed the first 20 minutes of the show somehow.  It was disjointed, full of little plot holes and not nearly enough character background for an uncomfortable first pilot date.

Wait...now I get it! Is that what the whole date scene was about with Ellis (Travis Fimmel) and Rose (Lindsay Pulsipher)?  You know, how they were all 'let's not get into our past or what we do' on the first date?  Hmmm, interesting.  However, if that's the case then I just feel like the writers thought they were being clever but really just made something up to cover the holes.

Bottom line, it's not the actors.  They're all actually really great, including Swayze.  I was genuinely surprised and definitely want to know more about his character, Charles Barker.  There's a lot to learn about him and it's not going to be pretty.  Also, Travis is pretty amazing.  Although, we did spend the most time with his character and I feel like we know the least about him.

I could have been tired, but in the end, I just felt confused.

Should you watch?
I can't say yet.  I'm definitely going to try out episode 2 and see if the pilot was just a mess because....it was a pilot.  However, I have a feeling if they don't fix the awkwardness by then, that will be my last viewing.
