National Geographic Brings Us Inside Guantanamo in April

As President Obama commits to close Guantanamo within the first year of his presidency, National Geographic Channel's "Explorer" offers viewers a surprisingly intimate portrait of the detention center in it's twilight.

In a special 2-hour episode premiering Sunday, April 5 at 9pm eastern, "Explorer: Inside Guantanamo" goes behind the razor wire to document what life is really like for the detainees and the military personnel who guard them.

Notorious. Secretive. Guantanamo Bay, home to the most famous detention center in the world, is a lightning rod for controversy.  Allegations of torture, illegal incarceration and human rights abuses have turned this military facility on the island of Cuba (created following the 9/11 terrorist attacks) into a potent symbol of America's war on terror.  The legacy of "Gitmo" and the fate of its more than 200 remaining detainees remains in question as it faces closure.

Explorer's crew spent nearly three weeks inside the prison, documenting the pressurized interaction and contest of wills among soldiers and detainees, as well as briefings and operations that have previously been off-limits.  The film will include candid interviews with troopers, top officials who believe there is an active al-Qaida cell in the facility, former interrogators and former detainees, as well as attorneys representing those still being held.

You're not going to want to miss this one!  Mark your calendars: April 5th at 9pm on National Geographic Channel!  I'll be sure to remind you as we get closer.
