AMC Plans New "Mars" Series

AMC is looking to add some bulk to it's line up and with the sci-fi genre becoming increasingly popular, it's only natural they look to the stars.

Mars, written and executive produced by Jonathan Hensleigh (Armageddon), is based on the novel "Red Mars" by Kim Stanley Robinson, and will follow the first human colony to live on the planet.

Christina Wayne, senior vp original series and miniseries at AMC, told THR, "This fits in with our bigger vision of wanting series that feel like cinematic one-hour movies. We're always looking for big genres but to do them in slightly different ways so they feel fresh and new."  She uses Breaking Bad as an example.

Mars is the third addition of new dramas for AMC, having recently announced plans for Ice about New Yorks diamond district and Carter Beats the Devil about the magician Charles Carter and his role in President Harding's death.

AMC hopes to get production underway by the end of the year and take advantage of their popularity after big success at the Emmys last month.
