Chapter Fifteen

For the first time in his life, Spencer broke a promise. Alistair successfully kept both Linda and Im away from Tanya. Linda returned home to be with her other children and grandchildren. She kept in touch with Spencer for any news about Tanya.

Shortly after Alistair was awarded custody, he threw a lavish party, announcing his victory. It was a fresh start, he declared. And in the spirit of fresh starts, he was giving his daughter a new name. One worthy of her new life. He took great pleasure in introducing the room to his daughter, Sheridan Crane. Spencer heard of the news through an associate who had been in attendance. His friend observed that Alistair was a good father when it suited him. There appeared to be no less than three nannies to look after the child.

Spencer sat down at his desk, grabbing the calendar in his hand. It was Tanya's birthday - her eighteenth.

How had so much time passed?

Linda had passed away the year before, leaving Spencer alone with his memories of 'that night' and the days that followed. He attended the memorial for Linda. It was eerie, being in Katherine's childhood home. He felt closer to her in a way.

Tanya was nearly her age when Katherine left for Los Angeles to become an actress.

Sheridan fought hard to hold back tears.

How could father do this? She was eighteen, why couldn't she stay in L.A. with her friends?

He had been adamant that she spent her last formative years at the Sorbonne, in Paris.

"Develop your creativity, my dear." he told her.

"What do you know about my creativity, father? What do you know about me at all?" she asked aloud.

Having spent her childhood tossed between private schools and tutors, she lacked the surroundings of a traditional childhood.

Not until she turned sixteen and got her first car, did that change. Now having grown a circle of friends, she was being torn from them and shipped off to France.

"Please let me survive the next four years." she prayed.
