Chapter 9
Luis looked over at Sheridan for the umpteenth time. He just couldn't believe that she was actually here, sitting in his living room, beautiful as ever, and seemingly oblivious to what she was doing to him. Or she did know the effect she had on him and was just trying to make him fall for her so she could string him along. Pain and anger washed over him as he remembered her piercing words that night. "Oh, you mean Luis? That holier-than-thou common cop? Please." That was it. Either Sheridan was going to leave soon, or he was excuse himself on the pretense of work. Luis buried his face in his hands and sighed.

"Hey man, you okay?"

Luis looked up and saw Chad Harris standing in front of him with a concerned look on his face. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little stressed out from work, that's all." 'Yeah, the work of trying to keep Sheridan off my mind.' Luis thought. "How about you? How's the music business treating you?"

Chad could see that Luis was anything but fine, but he grinned and answered, "Couldn't be better." And that was true. After finally getting his big break from Lou Pearlman, who happened to be a good friend of Ethan's, Chad had gotten a job as a talent scout for NuMusic Records, a new company Lou was starting up. It was like a dream come true. He got to listen to exceptional music and meet new people every single day. Add that to the hefty paycheck he received every month, and Chad felt like he was walking on air. Luis nodded and smiled. That was great. Everyone's life was great. His had been, before he had laid eyes on Sheridan tonight.

Beth finished taking the customer's order when she noticed an attractive young man walk through the door. He looked familiar where had she seen him before? Realization hit her. Of course! He was the one that had caught her before she fell. As Nick came in, she wondered why she hadn't seen how attractive he was before. His night-black hair flopped over onto his forehead, being careful not to hide his soulful hazel eyes. He was tall and agile, strolling into the restaurant with ease. Beth caught his gaze and felt an involuntary shiver go through her body. He smiled at her, revealing a row of perfectly straight white teeth. Beth smiled back, a little more widely than she had intended. She couldn't help it. There was just something about the stranger that was ⦠appealing.

"So we meet again, Ms. Wallace," Nick said as he walked up to her. "This really is a small town."

Beth laughed. "Welcome to Harmony. You're not from around here, are you? I mean, I don't think I've ever seen you before." 'Because if I had, I certainly would have remembered,' she thought.

Nick feigned hurt. "Is it really that obvious?" he asked sadly.

Beth laughed again. "Only to the trained eye," she said sympathetically. "I've lived in Harmony practically my whole life. So, I know most of the people around here." She suddenly realized she was rambling on. "Well, have you decided what you want to order yet?"

"Yeah, I'll have some hot chocolate with marshmallows. It's pretty cold out there."

"Well then, stay in here and warm up while I get your order ready."

"Would you mind joining me after you're done? I mean, there's not that many people coming in, and I wanted to ask you a few questions about Harm-"

"Sure," Beth replied, interrupting. "I'll be right out." With that, she turned around and walked into the kitchen.

Sheridan sighed. She tried to act interested in what Whitney, Simone, Theresa, and Jessica were discussing, but her mind was already preoccupied with someone across the room. Her cell phone rang. "It's mine," she told Ethan, Sam, Luis, and Theresa when they looked up and checked their phones. Sheridan excused herself and walked over by the front door so she could get some privacy. "Sheridan Crane," she answered. "Oh, hello sir. Uh huh, okay, yes I did, thank you." She paused and looked at her watch. "Don't worry about it, sir, it will be on your desk tomorrow morning. Bye."

Sheridan walked over to where Ethan was sitting. "I'm really sorry, Ethan," she said. "But that was my boss on the phone, and he wants me to finish a report by tomorrow, so I have to go. I'll pick up my car from your apartment tomorrow morning."

"You're not going anywhere," stated a voice from behind her. She turned around, only to come face-to-face with Luis.
