Chapter Eleven

"Of course Chad has to ruin our moment." Kay whispered as she and Reese broke apart.

"Get up there and wow ‘em." Reese smiled, and pushed her towards the DJ’s booth. Timidly she walked over to where Chad was standing and grabbed the cordless microphone. She looked up at Chad, who nodded. Sighing, she made her way up to the elevated floor of the room, and stood still, waiting for the room to quiet down.

"Well, I guess this means we’re halfway through the evening. And who am I to break tradition. So here it goes." Kay said as she waited for the first chords to start. Clearing her throat, she straightened her posture and searched the crowd. Her eyes finally landing on Miguel, she began to sing:

"You and me. We used to be together, everyday together, always. I really feel, that I’m losing my best friend, I can’t believe this could be, the end. It looks as though, you’re letting go, and if it’s real then I don’t want to know.

Don’t speak, I know what you’re sayin’, so please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts. No, no
Don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’, and I don’t need your reasons,
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts.

Our memories, they can be inviting, but some are all together mighty, frightning. As we die, both, you and I
With my head in my hands I sit and cry

Don’t speak, I know what you’re sayin’, so please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts. No, no
Don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’, and I don’t need your reasons,
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts.

It’s all ending, we gotta stop pretending, who we are.

Kay rocked herself back in forth on stage as the instrumental played. The crowd was in awe, captivated by her voice. They hadn’t expected to hear such a powerful song, so beautifully song. Even Hank was bewildered by Kay’s voice. He had known she was a good singer, but he never imagined this.

You and me. I can see us dyin’, always

Don’t speak, I know what your sayin’, so please stop explainin’
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts. No, no
Don’t speak, I know what you’re thinkin’, and I don’t need your reasons
Don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts

I know what you’re sayin’, so please stop explainin’
Don’t speak, don’t speak, oh
I know what you’re thinkin’, and I don’t need you’re reasons
I know you’re good, I know you’re good, I know you’re real good, oh!
La la la la la. La la la la la, oh, oh, oh-oh, hush hush, darling. Hush, hush, darling. Hush
hush, don’t tell me ‘cause it hurts.

Tears streamed down Kay’s face as she finished the song. Unable to stand it any longer, she dropped the microphone and ran out of the hall, with Reese trailing from a distance.

"Hank, no." Beth called out, as Hank started to pull towards the door.

"But she just left crying. I’m her uncle, I have to do something!" Hank explained. A new, fast paced song began playing, and kids started dancing around them as if nothing had happened.

"Hank, Reese is out there with her. I think he may be more of a comfort to her than you right now."

"How do you figure?" Hank asked, looking between Beth and the door.

"If I was Kay, I’d rather be talking to my boyfriend than my uncle." Beth explained.

"But...She just." Hank babbled.

"Reese’ll handle it. Plus, we’ve got a job to do. She wouldn’t like it if we disobeyed orders." Beth reminded him, slowly leading him back to the dance floor. They stood still for a moment, each searching the others eyes.

"What would I do without you?" Hank wistfully asked.

"A lot of stupid things." Beth answered. The stare between them intensified, and Hank found himself leaning down as she leaned up. Their lips met with a passion Hank didn’t know he possessed. The barrier broken, Beth opened her mouth up, and let him explore the deep recesses of her mouth. She had never felt such a fire burning within her, and she wished they weren’t at a high school dance.

Quickly she broke away from him when she realized where they were, and who they were in front of. Hank looked at her with shock and pain, and instantly Beth felt guilty. Leaning up to his ear, she whispered, "we can do more later. Just right now, we’re in front of a group of horny teens, and we’re not being good examples."

Hank cleared his throat and allowed a light chuckle to escape, making Beth’s heart beat fast. "You’re right. I just wish the dance would end."

"Kay! Kay wait up!" Reese hollered as he followed Kay out into the parking lot. When she finally stopped, it was in front of her car. Slumping down onto the hood, she lost herself in her tears. It wasn’t until Reese’s hands grabbed her arms was she aware of his presence. He quickly pulled her up and enveloped her.

"Kay, calm down. It’s okay. You did beautiful." Reese soothed as his hands ran up and down her arms.

"I’m sorry Reese. It was just so hard. And I let the emotions get to me." Kay said to Reese’s chest.

"No one expected different. But let me say this. You did wonderful. Absolutely perfect."

"Really?" Kay looked away from his chest and into his eyes. They shone with something she couldn’t place, but it looked like pride.

"Really." Reese answered, leaning down. He captured her lips in what seemed to be a chaste kiss, but soon Kay opened her mouth and slid her tongue against his lips, begging for more. He allowed her access, and then returned the favor. They parted, panting.

"Miguel who?" Kay questioned.

"I don’t know, but let’s go enjoy the rest of our prom." Reese breathed.

"As long as you’re with me." Kay smiled, and they walked back towards the hall, hand in hand.
