Kay practically ran to school Monday morning. She hadn’t
waited for something so important for so long. Not since Christmas, at least. The weekend for her was a blur. She
had hung out at the Book Cafe both days, talking about nothing but the play. She could tell everyone around her
was sick of it, but she couldn’t help but be excited. This could change everything. From the way her classmates
thought about her to Miguel’s feelings.
The line around where the cast list was posted was long and crowded with people checking everything out. Kay spotted
Simone some where in the middle and went to join her.
"Hey." Simone weakly said.
"That bad?" Kay asked.
"He blew up. I didn’t think I’ve ever seen him that mad." Simone answered.
"What are you going to do if you got it?" Kay inquired.
"Decline. My life is worth more than the part." Simone replied.
"Your dad really got that mad?"
"He said that I should be ashamed of myself for even auditioning for that part. He said it was too stereotypical,
and no daughter of his would be playing Mammy."
"Wow. Did you fight back?" Kay asked.
"For a while. I told him that was how the character was written in the book, but he wouldn’t listen. So finally
I gave up." Simone stated.
"Well, I hope you do get another part then."
"So do I. I really want to do this play." Simone quietly replied.
The line progressed while they talked, and finally they found themselves at the front, staring at the list. Kay’s
eyes read down the paper that was neatly decorated with stars and other stamps.

Kay glanced over at Simone and smiled gleefully. She had the part she wanted. She was Scarlett. Simone also wore
a smile on her face.
"I did it Simone! I got the part!" Kay exclaimed.
"I know! Congrats!" Simone said, hugging her best friend.
"You too!" Kay said.
"Thanks. This is going to be fantastic. I’m so psyched!" Simone replied.
"Well, it’ll be good. Reese got Rhett." Kay remarked.
"Kay, stop it. He’ll do Rhett fine. He did better than Miguel up on stage."
"Whatever Simone. I’m not going to let that get me down. After all, Rhett does leave me in the end."
"Yes, after you figure out that Ashley isn’t the man for you." Simone said with an eye roll.
"I’m still acting with Miguel. Maybe when he sees how great I am, he’ll rewrite the book and have Ashley
fall for Scarlett."
"Kay, you’re delusional." Simone said.
"Hey, I live my life the way I like, you do the same." Kay barked back.
"Okay. I’ve gotta go talk to my father, and tell him I didn’t get the part. I’ll see ya later." Simone
"You do that. See ya." Kay started to walk down the busy hall towards her locker. The students were
unusually up beat for the Monday morning, but Kay attributed that to the casting list being released. As she put
her things in her locker, a hand touched her shoulder, and she jumped at the touch.
"Oh, it’s you Reese. God, you nearly scared the hell outta me."
"Sorry. I just wanted to congratulate you. You deserved the part, and I can’t see anyone else being Scarlett."
"Thanks Reese. Same to you." Kay replied. "You got glasses again." She sighed.
"Yeah. I don’t like contacts, they hurt my eyes." Reese commented. "But I did get thinner frames."
"That’s a relief." Kay mumbled.
"What did you say?" Reese asked.
"Nothing. Just that we better get to class. The bell’s about to ring." Kay stated, grabbing her books
for her first hour and shutting her locker. She and Reese shared the same first hour, so she turned around and
began to walk with him down the hall.
