Don’t Think I’m Not

Chapter 30

Sam and Luis, followed by an entourage of other officers, ran down the stairway. They reached the bottom and looked around. A haze coated the room, but finally they were able to make out a man leaning over another person. They pulled out their guns and approached him, not recognizing who he was.

"Wait boys, put your guns away, it’s Hank." Sam shouted, upon realizing the man was his brother. Sam ran up next to him, and Luis followed. They gasped as they realized who Hank was leaning over. Gwen.

Hank’s hands were firmly pressed against her chest, putting pressure on the gun shot wound. Blood poured out over his hands, and a sobbing was coming from him. Sam immediately got his cell phone out, and dialed the ambulance as Luis stooped down and helped Hank.

"Hank, what happened, are you okay?" Luis asked, checking Gwen’s neck for a pulse.

"How do you think I am? The love of my life is bleeding to death! And it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for me!" Hank snapped.

"Hank, you’re being to hard on yourself." Luis reasoned.

"No I’m not. They wouldn’t have tried to kill her if I didn’t turn fed and try to find her. I heard them say it!" Hank sobbed.

"They just said that to get to you. You worked with these guys, you know how they operated." Luis replied. "She’s got a pulse."

"I know." Hank mumbled. "Where the hell’s the ambulance?"

"It’s coming. How is she?" Sam asked, stooping down next to Hank and looking Gwen over.

"Dying! How does she look to you?" Hank snapped.

"Calm down, the boys are pulling the freighter in closer as we speak." Sam soothed. Hank stayed silent as he continued to put pressure on Gwen’s wound. The blood flowed freely, and he couldn’t help but think of what would happen if she didn’t make it. He’d have no reason to live. He loved her! But he never got a chance to tell her! ‘God she has to live. She just has to!’ He chanted in his head.

After what seemed like hours, the boat was finally boarded by the paramedics. They took over and pushed Hank out of the way. Hank stayed back and watched as they worked to stabilize her. Their faces were grim, and Hank couldn’t help but feel as though he was loosing her.

Luis’ gentle touch to his shoulder brought him back to reality, and he looked at his friend. "Hank, c’mon. We’ll meet him at the hospital." Luis stated.

"I wanna ride with her." Hank shook his head.

"They won’t let you. It’s too critical. C’mon, Sam’ll drive with the lights on." Luis said, gently grabbing Hank by his shoulders and escorting him up the stairs. The paramedics followed almost immediately after, with Gwen on a stretcher. Hank watched as they loaded her and sped off before entering Sam’s car and following the ambulance.

‘God let her be okay. There’s so much I have to tell her. So much she has to live for. Please God, let her be okay.’ Hank prayed as they raced across town.

Sheridan dropped her coffee mug as Luis told her the news. Gwen was shot, in the chest. Sheridan made a promise to be there soon and quickly hung up. Shock had overtaken her, and she subconsciously slipped on her jacket and headed out the door. She stomped through the freshly fallen inch of snow and over to her car.

"Sheridan!" Ethan called from behind her causing her to jump. She turned around and saw the bright smiling faces of Theresa and Ethan. "Sheridan, what’s wrong?" Ethan asked, noting the tears trickling down her cheeks.

"Oh Ethan." She said, hugging him tightly. "Something awful has happened."

"What? Did something happen to Luis?" Ethan asked, looking over at Theresa who was watching the scene intently.

"No, Gwen." Sheridan sobbed.

"Gwen!" Ethan and Theresa exclaimed together.

"Oh my God, you guys didn’t know?" Sheridan realized, pulling away from Ethan and looking at the puzzled faces of the young couple.

"No, know what? Sheridan, what’s happened?" Ethan asked, his tone rather demanding.

"She was shot." Sheridan meekly replied.

"Shot!" The duo exclaimed.

"The defendant kidnapped her, and locked her up. Hank and the entire Police Department and FBI have been looking for her for the past few days. Hank found her this evening. I don’t know a lot of details, I’m on my way to the hospital right now. Luis said it doesn’t look good, and Hank is, well, not well." Sheridan explained.

"We’re coming with you." Theresa said before Ethan could. Sheridan and Ethan stared, confused, at her. "Even though she may not believe it, I really was her friend. I don’t want to see anything happen to her. Plus, Hank has been a family friend forever." Theresa explained.

"I’ll drive. You’re in no condition to." Ethan said, looking directly at Sheridan. Sheridan nodded and unlocked her car, before hopping into the back seat. Theresa ran around to the passengers side and entered. They drove in silence to the hospital, each lost in their own thoughts.

Hank sat in the chair Luis had positioned him in. He hadn’t moved since they had arrived at the hospital. As he stared off into space, Luis and Sam talked in the corner.

"Look at him. It’s almost as if he’s not alive." Sam commented.

"If she doesn’t make it he won’t be. I hate to say it, but I’d watch him if something happens to her." Luis stated, looking over at his friend.

"You don’t think he’d really think about committing suicide?" Sam nervously asked.

"Put yourself in his shoes. He has no kids, no love. He’s a loner. If she doesn’t make it..." Luis trailed off.

"You could be right, but I hope to God you’re wrong." Sam commented. They watched Hank as he sat in his chair.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE’S NOT OUT OF SURGERY YET? DO YOU HAVE YOUR BEST IN THERE?" Jonathan Hotchkiss’ voice echoed through the corridor.

"And here comes the family." Sam groaned.

"Well, they’d have to come sometime." Luis sighed, and started to walk over to where Hank was sitting.
