Chapter 22

THREE DAYS LATER (MONDAY)

Gwen walked out of the deposition room with the copy of the tape and transcript in her brief case. She had talked to the clerk and arranged to have copies made of each, so that she could review them. She looked at her watch. It was eight at night. ‘No use going to the office. I’ll amend the charges to first degree murder tomorrow.’ She thought as she entered her car and returned to her condo.

She couldn’t shake the weird feeling she getting. All those strange looks that the defendant was giving her. And the cryptic message he had left the room saying. ‘Pretty ladies are a shame to waste.’ What did that mean? Was that some kind of threat? She wasn’t sure, but wasn’t anxious to find out.

Passing by the Crane estate, she noticed Sheridan’s lights on, and decided to stop in. She walked up the narrow path, and knocked loudly on the door. A few moments later, Sheridan came to the door, sweat beading on her forehead. She was dressed in a baggy shirt and a pair of jogging shorts.

"Sorry Sher, I didn’t know you were busy." Gwen excused.

"Don’t apologize at all. Come in, please." Sheridan smiled, stepping away from the door.

"What no Luis?" Gwen mused as she sat down on the couch.

"No, he’s got late station duty tonight." Sheridan frowned. "So, what brings you by?" She asked, slapping her knees.

"Oh, I just finished a long deposition for the trial, and passed the cottege on the way home." Gwen sighed.

"Girl talk?" Sheridan guessed.

"How’d ya know?" Gwen lightly chuckled.

"Just an instinct. So."

"So." Gwen mimicked.

"How are things with you and Hank?" Sheridan commented.

"As wonderful as they can be." Gwen smiled.

"Great! I’m so happy for you. You truly deserve to find someone you love." Sheridan genuinely stated.

"Thank you." Gwen meekly replied, focusing in her mind on the word ‘love’. "What about you and Luis?"

"Oh, same as always, madly in love." Sheridan smirked.

"Oh, just madly. What happened to passionately?" Gwen joked.

"Fine, be picky!"

"If you want me to be. But seriously, how serious is it? Have you talked about marriage? Or anything else in the future?" Gwen asked.

"Kind of. I mean, he hasn’t proposed, but we both know we want a future with each other." Sheridan supplied.

"Oh, well, time will tell." Gwen smiled.

"Yeah. How are things at work?"

"Hectic. I just was coming from a deposition. Trial starts next Monday, and we’ve gotta amend the charges to first degree murder now." Gwen sighed.

"First degree, why?"

"Wagner said in the deposition that Lonovich did more than just help get rid of the body. He led Lentz there, held him at gun point, and shot the second bullet into him."

"Wow. So he may go away for a long time now." Sheridan commented.

"He should. But enough about my job, how’s yours going?" Gwen asked, changing the subject.

"Wonderful. The kids are wonderful. I can see why Luis misses it so. That reminds me, what are you and Hank doing this Saturday?" Sheridan perkily said.

"Nothing I don’t think."

"Great! Do you want to help me and Luis chaperone the dance. It’s just a normal dance, informal and all, but we need adults there. So, do you think you can do it?" Sheridan anxiously asked.

"I think we can do it." Gwen replied, mentally checking her schedule.

"Awesome! It’ll be so much fun!" Sheridan exclaimed, hugging her.

"It will be." Gwen smiled. She was about to say something when her cell phone rung. "Excuse me." She said to Sheridan, and got up. She walked into the kitchen and answered her cell phone.

"Hello?"

"If you’re smart, you’d watch your back, pretty lady." The low, man’s voice stated. Heavy breathing followed.

"What?" Gwen shrieked quietly.

"You heard me. Watch yourself pretty lady." The man repeated before the line went dead. Gwen flipped her phone shut, and walked to the sink. Leaning over it, she calmed herself, ‘Calm down, Gwen. Get out of here and go home. Tell Hank.’ Once she decided she was calm, she left the kitchen and found Sheridan tidying up her living room.

"You okay Gwen? You look a little pale." Sheridan said, standing up and walking to her friend.

"Um, yeah. That was work. I really need to go. I’ll talk to Hank about Saturday, okay?" Gwen said, grabbing her coat and walking to the door.

"Yeah, fine. Are you sure you’re okay?"

"Fine, I just gotta get home and do some things." Gwen feigned a smile.

"Alright, then I’ll see you soon, okay?"

"Yep. Bye Sheridan, thanks for the talk." Gwen said pulling the door shut as she entered.

"Bye Gwen." Sheridan whispered. "I know something’s wrong, you don’t normally act like that." Sheridan sighed. "But if you can’t tell me, I guess I understand. I just hope that if you’re in trouble you tell Hank." Sheridan turned from the door and walked into her bedroom. She pulled her dresser drawer open and grabbed her night gown. ‘At least when Luis comes home I’ll be ready.’ She thought.
