Don’t Think I’m Not

Chapter 12

Working for the government was more than she expected, and she had only been at the District Attorney’s office an hour. Already she was reviewing a deposition and a doctors report. The deposition showed the defendant being irrational, and having mood swings, but the psychiatrist report said that he was perfectly sound, just acting. Then there was the defense’s doctor’s report. It stated that the defendant was schizophrenic, and that was the reason he killed Luke Lentz, one of the eight voices in his head told him to do it. It didn’t make sense, how could two doctors claim to different things?

She was jolted from her thinking by a knock on the door of her new office. It was write next to Adriana’s, and a door joined the two offices.

"Come in!" Gwen hollered.

"Are you Gwen Hotchkiss?" A man asked, stepping into the office. He was mid-forties, with cold blue eyes and gray hair sticking out spastically from his brown hair. He wasn’t tall, but wasn’t really short. He stared Gwen down for a moment until she finally answered his question.

"Yes."

"I’m Keith McCoy, assistant district attorney. I guess you could say I’m Adriana’s right hand man." He chuckled, stepping into the office.

"Oh, alright." Gwen smiled.

"She said that you had the Wagner doctor’s reports."

"Oh, yes, right here. I was just reviewing them." Gwen stated, handing the file over to Keith. "It’s kind of odd that two doctors said such opposite things."

"Yeah. That happens. Know the tough part comes, we need to discredit their doctor." Keith said.

"How do we do that?" Gwen had never heard of such a thing. How do you discredit a doctor?

"Look for little oddities, like always reaching the same conclusion, never having a sane client, or maybe something that proves he’s not a great doctor. Stuff like that, which will make the jury look down upon him." Keith explained.

"Oh, I got it." Gwen meekly replied. ‘This sounds like something out of a John Grisham novel.’

"Yep, we’ve done it-"

"Keith! I need you in here now! Adriana yelled through the office door.

"Coming!" Keith yelled back. "I’ll see ya around." He stated to Gwen, then turned around and left the office. ‘Hmm, discredit the doctor.’ Gwen quickly busied herself making phone calls about the doctor. She was getting a little information, but not much. She picked up the phone and was about to dial another number when Adriana entered the room.

"Gwen, dear, it’s almost twelve. I don’t want you stressing yourself out on the first day, go get some lunch. You did fine for you’re first morning. The notes you made on the doctor’s report made a lot of sense."

"Thank you, but I’ve-"

"No arguing, go get some lunch, then come back and do work. By the way, tomorrow is a court appearance by Ashley Williams, another A.D.A. here. I want you to attend the trial and take notes. She’s a real good lawyer, and you could learn a lot. Okay?" Adriana smiled warmly.

"Sure."

"Alright, now get out of here, I don’t want to see you back until one o’clock!" Adriana lightly laughed, then turned around and left Gwen’s office. Gwen sat her phone down and gathered her things before going to meet Sheridan at the Seascape. Would she ever have things to tell her!

Sheridan waited patiently at the table, it was 12:05, and Gwen was late. Not that she expected her to be on time, Sheridan had watched ‘Law and Order’, she knew lawyers had frantic schedules. She also knew Gwen, and knew she would show. She didn’t notice Gwen’s appearance until she sat down right in front of her.

"Gwen! Hi!" Sheridan smiled.

"Hello Sher. Sorry I’m late, the traffic was horrible, an accident or something. And then I didn’t get out of the office until eleven fifty something." Gwen explained.

"Don’t worry about it. So, how was your first day at work?" Sheridan asked, leaning on her hands.

"Oh, too great to let words explained. Tomorrow I’m going to court, and today I’ve been reviewing doctor’s reports." Gwen excitedly informed.

"Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this excited about work." Sheridan smiled. Her friend was happy, and that made her happy.

"Well, work’s only one part of why this day is so good." Gwen remarked, thinking about her and Hank’s kiss.

"Girl, spill it! I’ve been waiting to hear this!" Sheridan responded.

"Well, this-"

"Hello, I’m Danielle. Can I get you something to drink?" The waitress asked. Sheridan moaned loudly, and Gwen laughed at Sheridan’s behavior.

"Yes, I’ll have a Coke." Gwen smiled.

"Me too." Sheridan replied, anxious to get the waitress away and finish the conversation.

"Alright, I’ll be right back." Danielle smiled, and left the table.

"Okay, as you were saying." Sheridan prompted.

"Sher, you’re so impatient." Gwen giggled, "Okay, this morning, before Hank left, we, well, we kissed."

"You DID!!!" Sheridan screamed, prompting other tables to eye theirs suspiciously. "Really?" Sheridan whispered. Gwen nodded in response, and couldn’t conceal the bright smile that broke out on her face.

"Yep, it was so, so, wonderful. Simple wonderful." Gwen stated.

"Who started it?"

"Um, I did." Gwen nervously replied. Shouldn’t she have?

"Great! Now he knows how you feel! The gap is broken. Break out the Hallelujah Chorus!" Sheridan laughed.

"Sher, what would I do without you?" Gwen laughed.

"Well, you’d probably be bored out of your mind!"
