Chapter 3

"Kay? Miguel’s downstairs," Grace said softly as she opened the door to Kay’s bedroom the next morning and stepped inside. "He wants to know if he can come up. He says there’s something the two of you need to talk about."

Kay immediately sat up in bed, her heart beginning to beat a little faster. She knew what Miguel wanted to talk about—her confession of love the night before. What was he going to say? she wondered.

"All right, Mom," she replied, trying to keep her voice normal. "Could you please tell him to come on up? And could you hand me my hairbrush off the dresser as you go out?"

Picking it up, Grace smiled. "I’ll do better than that," she said as sat down on the edge of the bed beside Kay and began to run the brush through her daughter’s long, tangled brown hair. "What a horrible ordeal the two of you had last night."

Kay nodded, remembering how afraid she had been and how Miguel had tried to comfort her even though he was terrified too. "I really thought we were going to die. I would have, if not for Miguel," she said quietly.

"Thank goodness he was there, sweetie," Grace whispered, tears in her eyes as she leaned over and wrapped her arms around Kay. "I couldn’t have handled it if I lost you."

Kay simply closed her eyes and hugged her back, enjoying the feel of being safe and secure in her mother’s embrace.

"How’s your ankle this morning?" Grace asked, pulling back.

Kay pushed the covers off her and gingerly un-wrapped her ankle, which was badly swollen and a deep purple color, and winced as pain shot all the way through her foot and halfway up her leg.

"Oh, honey, maybe we should have Eve take a look at that," Grace exclaimed, noticing her reaction. "I know the paramedics said it would be fine with an ice pack and rest, but I would feel better having Eve check it out."

"All right, Mom," Kay replied with a sigh, re-wrapping her ankle as best she could. "But can we do it after I talk with Miguel? This conversation is very important."

"Of course," Grace answered, getting up and tucking errant strands of hair behind Kay’s ears as only a mother can. "I’ll go get Miguel, all right?"

Kay nodded, her heart beginning to pound inside her chest again. What had Miguel decided to do? Was he going to stay with Charity anyway?

After her mother left, Kay forced herself to take a deep breath and relax. There was no point in getting herself all worked up. If she and Miguel were going to talk about their relationship, she needed to be able to think clearly.

"Kay?"

At the sound of his voice, she jumped. Despite her best efforts, her nerves were still on edge. She still didn’t regret telling him the truth, but the uncertainty of what was going to happen next was eating away at her.

Glancing up, her eyes immediately locked with his, and an arc of electricity and heat leapt between them. She knew he felt it too, because his eyes widened and he took an involuntary step backward. Then he glanced away, breaking the spell.

"Hi, Miguel," she said softly.

"How are you feeling?" he asked gruffly, not looking at her.

"My ankle hurts pretty bad, but Mom is going to call Dr. Russell to take a look at it," Kay replied honestly.

Miguel didn’t reply, and after several long moments, Kay spoke again.

"Look, Miguel—we need to talk about what happened between us last night," she said, twisting her fingers together in her lap nervously.

"I know."

"Then why won’t you look at me?"

"Because I’m afraid of what I feel when I look at you!" he shouted, turning to face her.

Seeing the emotion and anxiety written all over her beautiful face, Miguel cursed to himself and crossed the room in three long strides. Pulling her into his arms, he brought his mouth down on hers and kissed her thoroughly. Kay moaned and parted her lips so he could deepen the kiss, and Miguel took advantage. He swept his tongue inside her mouth and brushed it up against hers, tunneling his hands underneath her long dark hair and cupping the back of her head so he could hold her in place.

Kay had no intention of moving, though. She had never felt anything like this in her life, and she couldn’t believe her dream had come true. One hand rested on his chest, while the other tangled in his hair and used it to pull him closer.

After several long moments, Miguel pulled back. "I’ve been thinking about doing that all night," he breathed, caressing her cheek.

"I’ve dreamed of that for so long," she whispered back, trying to get her breathing under control. She fought the urge to touch her lips, which were still tingling from his kiss. "Where do we go from here?"

Miguel sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "I don’t want to hurt Charity," he said regretfully. "I’ve been up half the night thinking about this, and the last thing I want to do is hurt her."

Kay felt her heart sink with disappointment. He was going to stay with Charity, she thought sadly. Despite the mind-blowing kiss they just shared, he was going to stay with her.

"But after last night and what just happened here, I can’t deny my feelings any longer," he continued.

At first, Kay wasn’t certain she heard him right. "What?" she asked.

"I can’t deny the way I feel anymore, Kay," Miguel repeated. "Not after this."

"Miguel, what are you saying?" she gasped, her heart in her throat.

"I’m saying that I love you, Kay Bennett," he replied passionately. "I’m just sorry it took a life-or-death situation to make me realize it."

Immediately, tears spilled over her cheeks at his words. She had dreamed of hearing him say he loved her for so many years—she couldn’t believe it had finally happened!

Overwhelmed by her emotions, she threw her arms around his neck, holding him to her tightly. "I love you, too, Miguel," she said softly. "I love you so much."
