Mom's Toffee Sticks from PapaC

3/4 cup softened butter or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
2 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
1 6-oz pkg butterscotch-flavored chips
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1 Tbso water
1/4 tsp salt
toasted slivered almonds


Blend together butter, brown sugar, egg yolk, vanilla and salt. Stir in flour. Spread mixture in a 13x9x2" baking dish. Bake in a moderately hot (350 degree) oven for 20 min., or until nicely browned. Cool slightly.

Combine shortening, butterscotch chips, corn syrup, water and salt in a saucepan. Heat and stir until sauce is smooth. Spread over the top of baked dough. Sprinkle on almonds. Allow topping to set. Cut into 48 1x2" sticks.
