When I think of blues as it pertains to one's humor, I think
of a depressed, let down feeling.
And cold weather does not affect me that way. I simply love it when the temperatures so low that when I'm outside,
I can see my breath, when people are bundled in their coats, scarves and mittens.
I certainly don't want to be out in it, however.
I love the safe, secure feeling of being inside while a fire blazes in the fireplace, which was what sold us on
renting
this apartment.
My favorite ways to while away cold days is reading books and articles, listening to tapes of old radio shows,
or
looking at movies--the oldies--with Joan Crawford and Montgomery Clift.
I just loved A PLACE IN THE SUN and Lana Turner in PEYTON PLACE. In my opinion, that girl couldn't act, but she
was glamorous and knew how to put on a show. Watching her is a delight.
On days that make you say brrr, I also enjoy tossing flour and the necessary ingredients in a bowl, and making
up a
batch of pumpkin muffins. I have received rave reviews for my pumpkin muffins. For all my muffins in fact. But
the
pumpkin ones makes everyone smack their lips.
A warm dwelling on a frigid day with the smell of cinnamon filling the air makes me fill secure and hopeful...
blessed
and grateful.
On blustery days, I also enjoy making a Dutch oven of scratch chicken noodle soup.
I don't use any of that soup starter nonsense.
I go the total scratch route, cutting up a whole chicken, which I toss in a pot after rinsing it. I add a quart
of water, chicken bouillon cubes, marjoram, an onion, sliced carrots, celery and a teaspoon of minced garlic which
can be located in the produce section of your local supermarket.
When I make soup, I always bake a batch of popovers.
I don't know what drove me to write this. But I love cold days; they make me feel safe and happy, and I know I
sound mushy, but I don't care. If you laugh at my sentimental side, I won't give you one of my pumpkin muffins.
