Tell a Friend

I spend way too much time at the theaters.
I'm a slave to the Hollywood Visionaries.  God help me.

NOTTING HILL

Directed by Roger Michell

Written by Richard Curtis

Starring Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant, Rhys Ifans,
Hugh Bonneville, Emma Chambers

My Advice: Wait and Rent It

Rating: out of

William Thacker (Grant) runs a travel book shop in Notting Hill. Imagine that!! But he's not doing to well. Business is slow and his life is even slower. However, things get even worse when Anna Scott (Roberts) stumbles into his store and the two fall merrily in love. Woopee.

Written by the same guy who did Four Weddings and a Funeral, you'd expect this to be smartly funny--which it is. Roberts is adept at portraying the world's most popular actress and does a fine job at jabbing at the media and stardom in general. Grant is....well.....Grant is fine as Hugh Grant. He stumbles, he bumbles. It's a big stretch for him. The supporting cast, just like in Four Weddings, is highly commendable, mostly so Grant's flatmate in the form of Spike (Ifans). When he's on screen just close your eyes and take a whiff. I swear you can smell him.

Sadly, his princess is anything but and soon, as she shows her true colors, we a rooting for him to lose her as opposed to win her. She is self centered, self serving, alllllllllllll about self. She thinks nothing of dumping on her true love in order to save her own face and choose the easier path that life presents her.

I won't say more, I hate to spoil, but the humor of the film is palpable, and the acting is as fine as the acting in any syrupy love-flick I've seen, and then end is.....well....you'll see.
