GLOWING
LANTERNS
You can make simple lanterns out of tin cans:
Choose empty cans with no sharp edges, and peel off the labels.
Fill each can with water, and freeze overnight; the ice helps the
cans keep their shape while you punch holes in the sides to let
light shine through. To create the light-holes, sketch a repeating
geometric pattern (like diamonds) on a 2-inch wide strip of masking
tape, and wrap the tape around the can; or attach a piece of paper
with a sketch of a scary ghost or Halloween pumpkin. Following the
lines of your pattern or sketch, lightly pound nails—small or large,
depending on the size of holes you want—through the can, and make
two holes for the handle. Remove the ice. Make a handle out of ribbon
or 16-gauge wire. Light up any Halloween lantern with battery-operated
lights. |
