    Is there any reason why,
when officers responded to a report of a break in,
they needed to be insulted, degraded and have comments made about their mothers?
I won't apologize for saying I have a lot of respect for law enforcement.
They take reams of sh*t on a daily basis.
And yet they are the ones you all are hoping will show up when you are in trouble and need help.
Gates is as mouthy and uncensored about racism as Obama's other friend, the Reverend Jeremiah "God Damn America" Wright.
And as long as Obama keeps siding with these people,
he will be perceived as playing the race card.

Is there any reason why, when officers respond to a call about a burglury in process... and when they arrive they find out that the supposed "pepetrator" owns the house... that they can't act with decency, respect and calmness by saying "Have a good day" and leaving?
I'll give you that Gates, from what I've seen of him, seems to be a man with a chip on his shoulder. But, as I said before, I'm not going to judge too quickly or too harshly people who've been persecuted just because of the color of their skin.
It sounds to me like both parties took it too far. Yes, Gates was angry and indignant- not good things to be around cops investigating a "crime"! But Crowley went a tad too far by arresting him... didn't he?
And before you tell me that you just can't judge him because you weren't there... c-mon, you weren't there to hear Gates either.
Bottom line- they both over-reacted... and then Obama made a goof by commenting on the whole thing. But it sounds like the matter is being resolved.

How about this for a reason?
How about the fact that Gates was mouthy, crude and disrespectful,
WAY before he pulled out his ID and proved who he was.
Is that a good enough reason?
    Had Gates simply said,
    "I'm sorry officers.
    There has been a misunderstanding.
    I am the homeowner.
    Here is my ID, "
NONE of this would have happened.
As I used to say to my kids,
    "who started it?"
The cops didn't just drop by that house for no reason.
They were called on the report of a burglary.
Anyone with common sense can see who is at fault here.

Can more than one person be "at fault" in your little scenario?
As I said- you and I weren't there. We don't really know what exactly was said on either side. There are differing accounts of what happened... after all.
Sometimes things are just a bit more complex in the real world.

actually, there are little differences between the two sides as to what actually transpired...

what gates, obama, rev wright and sharpten have in their hearts regarding law enforcement was brought to the forefront here...

most decent and intelligent folks would have thanked the cops initially and cooperated fully... but not jerks like the prof...

Let's put some emphasis on the word "intelligent".
When asked to prove he was the homeowner, Gates produced his University ID.
That does not link him to his house.
The whole time, Gates bitched about white cops harassing black men.
    These cops were not harassing.
They did not pull Gates over at random.
These cops answered a suspected burglary call.
And Gates's response to that was to go into a tirade about racism,
instead of cooperate and just prove he was the homeowner.
The cops were doing their job.
    Gates was being an asshat.

mtj, you are ignoring the reality that there are differing accounts as to what actually happened.

Bigeasy I think it's just awful that you are attempting to link Obama... and all black folks... and Democrats (by extension, right?) with somehow hating cops. That's just ridiculous.
I agree with you that probably you and I and mtj would have just thanked the cop and it would have been over.
But then again... we don't have a history of being harrassed by cops just because of the color of our skin and what sex we are... do we?
I'm not absolving Gates of blame here... he seems pretty prickly to me... just pointing out that people's experiences usually affect their reactions and actions.

    No, I'm not.
I'm just choosing not to believe Gates's account.
I have heard about and read plenty of situations where white police officers were unfair to a black person.
This is not one of them.
    Oh and reines,
does GATES have a history of being harassed by cops because of the color of his skin?
If not, then the over reaction was uncalled for.
