James Franco is devastatingly brilliant in this movie. In fact, he took over my personal favorite male performance this year from Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network. Eisenberg had the benefit of an amazing script, supporting cast and director. But in 127 Hours, it is pretty much just Franco and a rock, and he draws you into his desperation in spite of Danny Boyle's unnecessary hyper-stylized direction which should have been toned down, IMO. As a whole, I wish the movie had been directed by someone else, but Franco is outstanding. It is hard to watch at times, especially the amputation scene, but worth it. I'd give Franco an A+ and the movie itself a B.
