You are absolutely right- health care in the United States is treated as a business... which means that you can, indeed, have the very best health care- IF you can afford it! And millions and millions of Americans can't. It's all about protecting the very hefty profits of the private insurers... which they shroud in talk of "freedom" and "individual choice", etc... to manipulate the very people who could benefit from national health care themselves into not supporting it!

Gee, 54 bucks a months sounds heavenly to me for basic health care... and I'm sure it would to most Americans. I would gladly wait a while to see non-emergency specialists... or have non-emergency surgery, if I could pay 54 bucks a month instead of what we do pay.

As Catstrack said... it's really pitiful that the United States still... still, doesn't have some form of national health care! You don't know how many of our citizens envy countries like yours that do.
Welcome Corker. Thanks for posting and sharing your experience. When my boss stopped paying for my insurance, it was via a private company but he was picking up the bill, it covered me ONLY while in the hospital, no other coverage pre-hospital or post. And it was $285ish dollars a month. Positively insane to say the least and at the last price increase he told me he could no longer cover me so I have been with out all of this year. My husband has no coverage either and we cross our fingers daily that we stay healthy until we turn 65 and can be covered by Medicare. What a way to take care of yourself, eh? I take my blood pressure for free at the blood pressure booth at Wal-Mart when I go there, thank you Wal-Mart. So that's my health plan and it mirrors a lot of people in this country.

Thank you for the welcome. I'm sorry, I misquoted, I forgot premiums went up 3 bucks about six months ago... This is how it works... its 57 dollars for a single person who makes over $30,000 a year, or $102 for a family of 2, or $114 for a family of three or more. If you make less than $30,000, you get a percentage covered dependent on your income, until you reach less than $22,000 a year, in which case the government will cover the full amount.

$285 a month? holy crap! And that's for one person? That's insane! Can I ask what happens if you have no insurance and lets say you get in a car accident... Will the hospital still treat you? Or would they turn you away?

If you want it, you can get extra private insurance in Canada. This will get you things like a private hospital room, Coverage of out of hospital care not covered by the basic government plan, like massage therapists, acupuncturists, medical supplies like orthotics, purchase/rental of some medical equipments, out of country health care , etc etc... it depends on the plan... but it definitely isn't $300 bucks a month. My "extended health care plan" that I get through my work, costs me 16 bucks a month and my work kicks in 30... so what's that? $45 bucks a month.

As I said, our is not a perfect system. The government has been looking at ways to improve it. Especially with the mass of ageing baby-boomers coming down the line, its going to add a lot of stress to the system. They've been studying health care systems around the world, trying to get ideas how to improve services. And they've been working to get those wait times down, and i think they're starting to make some progress. The longest wait times tend to be for things like knee and hip replacements... And there are some people who will choose to go to the States and pay to have their non-essential surgeries done more quickly... mainly wealthy people... But there is in no way mobs of people flooding over the border to get health care. In fact I know a guy who was down in Seattle for a football game. He broke his arm, and made the two hour drive home to Canada before he would get treatment.

Luckily if I am in my car and have an accident I have medical coverage because I can purchase that as part of my policy. Other than that, if it's critical, you are taken to the nearest hospital who can see you, you get the bill, you have a heart attack and don't call for help because you can not pay that bill either! It's a mess, our "system" is for-profit, thanks Richard Nixon, and has been for some time. If you can take yourself to a "County" hospital which most states have, then they will work with you on the bill. Other than that you are stuck.
I am lucky that I have a family doctor who is still a real country doctor. I can see him and pay cash for a check up and he will foot the bill for blood tests and let me pay over a couple of months if I need to. He spends as much time with you as you need, not the 8 minutes that is now allowed by insurance companies. If anything serious happens to either of us, we are going to have to check our options and see what we can do. But it is scary, like flying blind as the saying goes.

no hospital emergency room is allowed to turn you away because you don't have insurance in the u.s.

thank you nixon? what..did we have socialized medicine before he was elected?

I'd like to see this "brilliant" canadian brand take on 14 million illegals aliens and see how well that would shake out for them... one of the big hospitals here in dallas, parkland sucks up about 10 million a year in the maternity ward giving free anchor baby service... i'd like to see british columbia deal with that..

canada's doctors are miserable.. our's are about to be like them if we don't get the repubs into office and stop the socialism.. free my ass.. someone is being forced to pay for it and provide it... that's the retardation of a socialist... thinking that something is free.. .

I didn't say they couldn't turn you away, you can't afford to be there if you aren't insured. You'll have a heart attack when the bill comes in.

Nixon: for once a Republican who wimped out, the quote is from Wikipedia, "In his 1974 State of the Union address, Republican President Richard M. Nixon called for comprehensive health insurance.[17] On February 6, 1974, he introduced the Comprehensive Health Insurance Act. Nixon's plan would have mandated employers to purchase health insurance for their employees, and provided a federal health plan—similar to Medicaid—open to any American on an income-based sliding scale basis." He wimped out and didn't cram it down our throats, it would have probably been the only noteworthy he would have ever done in his life.

And Corker, I took my daughter to a Canadian doctor when she was in school for her school physical for sports, the price on this side of the border was outrageous even in the 1990s and I have to say I was quite pleased with the man. Cost for an entire school physical was $33.00. Also pay no attention to Big Easy, he is a radical Republican who is positive that the world is full of folks looking for a free ride so is against any public policy that helps people in any way. He feels that everything belongs in the private sector to include outsourcing our government whenever possible. How one is to have police, fire departments, safe roads he has yet to explain, but that is what he is all about.

pushing through this bill is a job killer and trying to put health care under another entitlement program when you can't even run medicare and medicaid is total stupidity
That lie is the one YOU are pushing, BE and the paltry deceptions about health care in Canada and the UK is really like according to those who can't stand the idea of health care being available and affordable to regular people in the US. Did you bother to read the links I posted?

It is actually rather silly to believe that Canada or the UK have third world health care and IF they did...are they all so stupid to like the way it works for them?

What this is all about is the usual fear and scare tactics of a political party and it's media who puts the earnings of the big medical corporations first and what could be good for the regular US working class citizen last.

Please post the link to the unclean hospitals and bathrooms where babies are being born.

Also, what the heck about waiting lines? Have YOU ever tried to get an appointment with a specialist in this country and didn't have to wait weeks or months...even with your private insurance?

    Sheesh...get a clue... lol

Yes, you can get emergency care in a hospital emergency room if you have no insurance... but you will end up thousands of dollars in debt. A friend of my son's has diabetes and no health care coverage because he can't afford the premiums... and he's racked up about 16,000 in hospital bills over the past few years. He pays what he can every month... but it's effectively ruined his credit or his chances of ever getting a better job in the future.

There's no sensible, practrical, or moral reason why that has to be... in the wealthiest country in the world. It's only GREED that keeps the United States from joining the rest of the developed world in seeing basic health care as a right... and not a commodity.

corker... how does it work for prescription drugs? Are they covered under the basic monthly charge also?
