Why don't honest journalists take on Roger Ailes and Fox News?

    By Howell Raines
    Sunday, March 14, 2010

One question has tugged at my professional conscience throughout the year-long congressional debate over health-care reform, and it has nothing to do with the public option, portability or medical malpractice. It is this: Why haven't America's old-school news organizations blown the whistle on Roger Ailes, chief of Fox News, for using the network to conduct a propaganda campaign against the Obama administration -- a campaign without precedent in our modern political history?

Through clever use of the Fox News Channel and its cadre of raucous commentators, Ailes has overturned standards of fairness and objectivity that have guided American print and broadcast journalists since World War II. Yet, many members of my profession seem to stand by in silence as Ailes tears up the rulebook that served this country well as we covered the major stories of the past three generations, from the civil rights revolution to Watergate to the Wall Street scandals. This is not a liberal-versus-conservative issue. It is a matter of Fox turning reality on its head with, among other tactics, its endless repetition of its uber-lie: "The American people do not want health-care reform."

Fox repeats this as gospel. But as a matter of historical context, usually in short supply on Fox News, this assertion ranks somewhere between debatable and untrue.

The American people and many of our great modern presidents have been demanding major reforms to the health-care system since the administration of Teddy Roosevelt. The elections of 1948, 1960, 1964, 2000 and 2008 confirm the point, with majorities voting for candidates supporting such change. Yet congressional Republicans have managed effective campaigns against health-care changes favored variously by Presidents Truman, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Clinton. Now Fox News has given the party of Lincoln a free ride with its repetition of the unexamined claim that today's Republican leadership really does want to overhaul health care -- if only the effort could conform to Mitch McConnell's ideas on portability and tort reform.

It is true that, after 14 months of Fox's relentless pounding of President Obama's idea of sweeping reform, the latest Gallup poll shows opinion running 48 to 45 percent against the current legislation. Fox invariably stresses such recent dips in support for the legislation, disregarding the majorities in favor of various individual aspects of the reform effort. Along the way, the network has sold a falsified image of the professional standards that developed in American newsrooms and university journalism departments in the last half of the 20th century.

oh what a crock of whiney assed BS!!!

there was NO fairness and objectivity before talk radio and FOX... when you look at all the other outlets they don't even NEARLY measure up to EQUAL time...

a 2,000 page bill set to allow the govt to take over 1/6th of the private sector, and pelosi says "we need to pass it so we can see what's in it"

where's you mainstream "objective" piece on that Howie?

of course the majority of Americans want reform, but they DO NOT WANT what pelosi, reid, and obama want...

you have a REPUBLICAN occupying TED FREAKIN Kennedy's seat for crying out loud because he ran SPECIFICALLY against it...

when it comes down to specific polls, 25% want obama care, 25% want the govt totally out of it and the OTHER half want them to START OVER--- do something with LESS govt intervention...

where's you coverage howie on how pelosi and reid are having private discussions with the dems who are up for re election and are being told to "wait" before you commit because we MAY be able to allow you to vote AGAINST it to save your jobs?

how's that for objective mainstream "honest" reporting...?

where are your "mainstream" articles on how many dems are going to LOSE their jobs for voting FOR obama care?...hmmm howie?...any answers for that you dimwit?

And you think that kind of wheeling and dealing in Congress doesn't go on all the time? C-mon Bigeasy- that's how the system works! Do you really think when Republicans controlled Congress that it wasn't exactly the same and even worse? Ever read about how they got that prescription drug bill passed? Not a pretty story!

The fact remains that Fox News is nothing but a blatant arm of the Republican party. That's O.K. THey've got the right to be so. But at least admit it! Stop with the nonsense about being fair and balanced! You look at their "news" coverage during the day... when they claim to be just a news and not an opinion network- and it's so much bull! Jon Stewart has done an excellent job showing how biased and partisan Fox News really is. The really creepy thing is how they constantly brainwash their viewers into thinking otherwise.

It's not "The News" any more, it's who can get the best ratings with whatever story they decide to tell and from which perspective. Facts seem to be beside the point, facts don't make for good ratings.

Yes... but Fox News is a level unto itself thesed ays for blatant partisanship! And please, Bigeasy, no talk about how partisan MSNBC is. Yes, their nightime pundit shows like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are. But their daytime NEWS programming isn't. All you have to do is watch both MSNBC and Fox News during the day to see clearly the difference. And MSNBC also has a pundit show on in the morning hosted by a conservative- Joe Scarboro. We don't see any shows hosted by anyone remotely leaning left on Fox!

Both programs cited are all about ratings which means they can sell advertising at higher prices. It's all about the money as is everything else on this planet. It's sick and disgusting, but that's the way it is. And I definitely do not agree with it.

Exactly, Granny. FOXnews, MSNBC, Rush, all the other pundit shows are about one thing:

The political "tribal" divide in this country, where the goal is making or continuing OUTRAGE to stoke their viewers.

BE, yes...the majority of American's DO want help care reform as they see the insurance companies eat up a large percentage of their take-home checks.

The against-health reform pundits have gathered in the sheep, just like they did when the Republican's held the majority in the first GW days and who did NOTHING for health care reform. All they did was borrow and spend to wage un-winnable wars while the private industry contractors have benefitted from all those misspent tax dollars that could have gone to some kind of viable health care reform THEN.

Because I live in an area where some lily-livered Democrats in Congress are wavering on voting for reform... we're being subjected to these awful ads against health care reform. With the ominous music, the rhetoric about a gathering storm, and the ever-present nasty, solemn voiceover predicting doom and gloom. And they always try to present themselves as speaking for the people... except that "the people" aren't behind these ads and have nothing to do with them. When you follow the money trail you always find that the ones paying for these ads are the same ones who have the most to lose financially if reform is passed- the health care insurers and their frontmen who run these ads.
One of the three members of Congress who were on the fence has come out and said he will vote for reform! Let's see if the other two have the courage and leadership to do so. One thing's for sure... a lot of us will be watching... and remembering who voted how when election time comes around again!
