View Full Version : The joys of small-town living--

I admit that there have been, and still are, times when I wish that I lived in a town that was a little bigger. However, there are certain perks; nothing is very far away, my kids can go to the library, the pool or school without being driven there or my worrying about their safety, and people are willing to bend a bit to help you. My son went to the dentist to have his teeth cleaned last month, and I had reserved an extra appointment for him because he knew that his front tooth, which he had broken several years ago and had had a root canal on, was likely needing attention. There was a tiny hole in it, and it was noticeably darkened. Anyway, it turns out that the dentist decided that it needed a crown, whereas the dentist who repaired it the first time just built it up with composite material, because he said that putting a crown on it would weaken it too much. Chris had a temporary cap put on, only he had to leave for school before the permanent crown came back from the lab.

While working on his tooth, the dentist mentioned the possibility of putting Chris's crown on in his BIL's dental office, which isn't too far away from the town where Chris is going to school. Anyway, Chris called me yesterday to let me know that that's what had been decided, so he didn't have to make a 4-hour trip back home, most likely skipping classes to do so. I'm not sure whether the dentist and his wife had planned a Labor Day trip to visit family, or whether they made one to accommodate us, but I certainly appreciate the fact that they did so. I just hope that the crown looks enough like his other front tooth so it isn't too jarring, although having a missing front tooth would be even more so. I had joked with him that had he lost it, we would have had to change his name to "Bubba". :D

That's a great story, Melinda. I grew up in a very small town like that here in California. Sadly, it's changed so much and I don't even enjoy it anymore when I go to visit my mom. Your story just brought back good and happy memories.

While I wish that we had more than one grocery store, or a good place to buy clothes and shoes in town, or even a drive-thru fast-food place, we do have quite a bit for the size of the town, and the other stuff is within an hour's drive. People know who you are when you go into a store, and you can go uptown and leave your keys in the car, knowing that it will still be there when you get back to it. There's a low crime rate; the only murder to happen here since I've lived here was the result of a domestic dispute, and took place four years ago. By now, there would have to be some very compelling reasons for me to move away, because I feel at home here.

I'm glad that I could bring you a smile, Kris.
