There's lots of debate about whether Snape is good or evil. But there’s a third possibility as well: that Snape is on neither side, but has been serving his own interests throughout. Follow the link below to a story fleshing out the idea on MSNBC:

Just for the record, I think that the idea that he was in love with Lily is a bunch of bunk. But I'll be happy to be proven wrong if it's a good story.

It's been so long since I've read any Harry Potter, but as I recall, Snape did have some history with James and Lily. I'm guessing there is some resolution to this in the next book.
