Ericka's recap at Dark UFO mentions an Egyptian Goddess of maternity and childbirth called Taweret, as an explanation for the statue. This makes oodles more sense than it being Horus.

(I haven't read it yet, so this is just off the comment you made, but) I wonder if the destruction of the fertility goddess' statue was when the fertility problems started.

All I can say is that the explanation of "the incident" should probably make things a tiny bit clearer for those of us who can't figure anything out at this point.
