When you know what we know now, it is interesting to go back and watch old episodes.
One of the more interesting is "Catch 22" in which we learn that Desmond was engaged to marry some woman named Ruth. And that a week before they were to be married, Desmond got drunk because he wasn't sure he was supposed to be marrying her. He then passed out in the street and when he woke up, he was given a hand, and some help from a Monk. Desmond took this as a sign that he "had a calling" and joined the monastery. But as it turned out, Desmond had no calling, he was only at the monastery in order to meet Penny, the day he was asked to leave the monastery.
So it seems that Desmond was "destined" to meet Penny, and that their union is very significant. Talk about your "course correction".
Throwing in that desk picture of Brother Campbell and Eloise Hawking was pretty cheesy though.
