This is interesting...from LostMedia...
I think what Mrs. Hawking is doing is ingenious. The Foucault Pendulum proves that the Earth is rotating. When a Foucault Pendulum is working right, it will drawn a symmetrical 'star', if you will, because the Earth is rotating at a constant rate. No matter where you are on Earth, the ground will rotate underneath the pendulum at the same rate and draw a symmetrical 'star'.
Now take the problem of finding an island where time is abnormal and compasses don't work. You place a Faoucault Pendulum there and you will get an uneven, asymmetrical star. As time and magnetics change, so does the rate at which the Earth spins.
That's what she is doing in the room. She's using the computer to pinpoint areas of the ocean. Then she's using the Foucault Pendulum to find any abnormalities in the rotation of the Earth on those points. Once she found the crooked star, she found the island. In Lost lore, it must be that the worse the rotation is off, the less time the Losties have to fix the problem. That's how she knows it's only 70 hours until doomsday.
The numerous stars indicate that the island has moved. Remember Charlotte found the polar bears in Tunisia. The story is Dharma used polar bears to turn the wheel because the bears could stand the cold and actually pull the wheel. Consequently, they vanished to Tunisia and the island moved. (Tunisia is oddly enough exactly on the other side of the Earth from the Pacific/Figi)
