Thinking along those lines, is it possible that Ben behaved ethically in letting the freighter explode, because it enabled him to serve the greater good by saving the Island?
This could be a further clue to how Locke will be acting. Ben has certainly behaved like this all along. He didn't seem to care who got hurt if the greater good was served. Locke is now in that position as the new leader of the Others.
