Is it common practice to report a person's surgery in the paper? On our local TV I have seen pleas for donors for a sick child, but whether or not that person received the organ and details of their surgery never made it in the paper.

Probably happened because they own the newspaper. I don't think stories like that are broadcast until after the transplant takes place. And the donor is never named.
