View Full Version : Dumbledore Is Gay
I have mixed feelings about this. Mostly, I wonder why Rowling is just now making this big announcement. Anyone else have some thoughts on this?

What are you talking about. I havent heard this.
Rowling fielded a question at a speaking engagement last week and stated that Dumbledore was gay. I just don't get why she didn't let on about this a long time ago.

She was asked if Dumbledore had ever been in love, and she responded that he was gay, and had had a crush on Gellert Grindelwald. She said that it didn't have anything to do with his being headmaster, so she hadn't mentioned it in the books. However, after the cheers she got from the audience, she said that she would have said it long ago had she known that it would have been received that way.
This is so stupid. First of all, if the character was gay then why didn't she write it into the story? Why come out now and make such a dumb comment? It has no bearing on the stories or his character. If it had she would have written about it. I think she's missing all the Harry hoopla and just made some comment to start controversy again. I think the conservative Christians were too quiet about this last book and she didn't like that.

As a writer, I totally agree with the above sentiment.
This all just seem contrived to me. If you are a writer and you are developing a character, you write that in your story. You don't develop a back story on a character and then tell your fans about after the book is already written.
I agree with you, I think its spotlight hog on her part now that the series is over. Its not like it was one book, she had SEVEN to mention that little tidbit, even in passing.
I think she didn't write it in because she didn't want to hurt her own book sales.
