Scoops for March 15, 1999
Scoops Section #1: Gary Sinclair, II (3/4/1999 - 3/16/1999)
Gary and Josie get into it again, because Gary has finally found out
that he's shooting blanks. He tells her their marriage is over. Cameron goes to get Josie so that they can prepare
for the transfusion, and interrupts their conversation. Gary leaves, and Cameron is left with that "I've got
a fishhook in my thigh and I LIKE it" look again. They go to see the doctor, who is preparing the baby, but
tragedy strikes -- the baby develops an infection. At first people just avoid telling Josie and Cameron anything,
leaving them to face every parent's nightmare, but finally one to the doctors tells them that they're very sorry,
but the baby didn't make it. Both Cameron and Josie are devastated by this news, and Josie feels as though her
world has fallen out from under her. With Gary gone, all she had left was the baby, and now it seems to her like
she's being punished for every sin she's ever committed.
After a lot of soul-searching, Gary decided that there might be a chance that he could forgive Josie and make a
life with her, but catches Cameron and Josie at just the wrong moment -- grief-stricken over the loss of Gary Sinclair,
II, Cameron and Josie have found solace in each other. Without alerting them to his presence, Gary turns and walks
out. Gary heads straight for a bar, where he runs into Cindy. The two of them spend a few hours getting drunk together,
then get it into their head that all they need to do to fix all their problems is get Grant Harrison for good.
They break into Grant's place to look for some evidence, but inebriated sleuths just aren't the best. They're caught
by Grant, who expresses his anger with Cindy in a physical fashion. Already on the edge, that pushes Gary right
over, and he threatens to kill Grant.
When Josie finally gets home, she finds that Gary truly has moved out. She barely has a moment alone with her pain
when Cindy storms in to continue her threats. (No one told Cindy the baby was dead, so she didn't realise just
how ill-timed her entrance was.) Josie takes out her grief and rage on the one person she feels she can blame for
her child's death -- Cindy. Josie's willing to acknowledge some culpability, but she makes it very clear to Cindy
that if it hadn't been for Cindy's blackmailing her, the baby would not be dead right now. Later, Josie heads right
for Joe, so she can confess her role in the Grant's continued freedom. Joe arrests Cindy, but she makes a deal
with him -- if he lets her go, she'll tell him where the tape is. After thinking about it, Joe releases Cindy,
and starts looking for his scuba gear.

Section #2: The Line to Kill Grant Forms at the Left...
Grant has a few questions for Donna, and he expects the truth from her. Meanwhile, Jake finds Grant's cufflink,
and wonders just how it got there...Of course, Grant isn't crazy. He knows that before he and Vicky can leave Bay
City for good and make a new life somewhere else (has he forgotten that he's the MAYOR?), he has to make sure some
of Bay City's citizens never squeal on him. Grant and Vicky spend more time together, and Cindy does her best to
convince the love of her life that Vicky is just using him, but Grant shoves her off. Vicky is desperate to get
Grant to trust her completely, so she uses her last ace in the hole -- she tells him that she knows for a fact
that Cindy shot him. Cindy isn't pleased with this little turn-about, and promises herself that Vicky and Grant
will pay for everything they've done to her. She decides to get even with Grant by setting him up for a fall --
she knows that Jake is violent at the best of times, and if he catches his wife making love with the mayor, he
just might lose it. She arranges for Jake to find the two together, but her plan doesn't work out quite as she
had hoped -- Grant was two steps ahead of her, and told Jake right to his face that he had slept with Vicky. In
a typical Jake move, he threatens to kill Grant. Jake figures he's covered all his bases when he asks Joe to arrest
Vicky to keep her away from Grant.
Grant will do anything he has to do keep Joe off his back about the fire, and hires a private detective to dig
up any information he can use against the police captain. He doesn't find any deep dark secrets in Joe's past,
but he does find one in Paulina's -- the baby she sold for adoption years ago. (Iris should have hired that private
detective.) He threatens to make that information public unless Joe "forgets" about the tape, and about
the fire that almost killed his wife and child. Joe threatens to kill him.
Grant can't risk Marley telling everyone the truth about him when she takes the stand, so he has to do some fancy
footwork to keep her from testifying for the next little while. He uses his clout and influence to arrange an extended
stay at Willowdale for Marley -- instead of testifying at an upcoming hearing, Marley is sentenced to a few more
months at Willowdale to make sure she's getting the help Grant has decided she needs. Being the kind, loving friend
that he is, he feels has has to let Marley know this news in person. Marley threatens to kill him.
Scoops
Section #3: Saving Private Cory
Tito can't risk Remy and Nick joining forces against him, so he does everything in his power to keep them apart.
When Remy and Nick have yet another fight, and he tells her that it's well and truly over, she runs to Tito looking
for a sympathetic ear. Later, Tito is more than a little annoyed when he finds out that Nick is making a concerted
effort to keep him from getting anywhere near Paulina's chequebook, but that has little effect on Paulina, who
decides that the time has come to introduce Tito to Rachel.
Meanwhile, although Cass is still in love with Lila, he can't let go of his obsession with Anne. He spends more
and more time with her, talking to her about his beloved late wife. Abandoned by her lover, Lila is left alone
with her husband, Matt, who takes full advantage of Cass' absence to get closer to his wife. Rachel continues to
search for Sparky's manuscript, and after another close encounter with Sparky, she realises just how much of a
danger he poses to her family. She is thankful when Amanda leaves town for awhile to go to New York, unaware that
her companion is none other than "David Halliday", Spark's alter-ego. Cass manages to do one useful thing
this week though -- he finds, and hides, Jordan Stark's manuscript, so he and Rachel can take a closer look at
it when they have the time.
Casting
News
Actor Michael Bubrick
will be making a brief stop-over on AW this week when he plays
Freeman, the private detective Grant hired to dig up the goods on the Carlinos.
Fact
or Fiction?
Rumor has it a few of the McKinnons will show up in town. There's a chance
that Ben McKinnon, who is the same age as Jake and dated Marley in the mid-eighties, could return to town, and
also that the son of one of Jake's cousins (making him Jake's second cousin) could show up in town in the future.
According to other rumors, AW is also looking to cast some Latino characters -- a young woman and an older male.
Why not just age Tomas and Luisa and bring them back to town, or maybe Angela Corelli?
Rumor has it that Tucker Sinclair and Kineisha Burrell could be making an appearance in Bay City at the beginning
of May sweeps. Tucker should enter town shortly after Gary, who it's rumored will be going off to detox.
How Do
I Kill Thee? Let Me Count the Ways...
It's anyone's guess how Grant will be killed off. His death date is tentatively
set for Thursday, March 25, but that won't be his last airdate, because he will air for at least another four weeks,
and presumably his killer will be revealed during May sweeps. The latest death scenario has Grant being blown to
smithereens. With AW's latest habit of, er, "borrowing" storylines from other shows, it wouldn't be surprising
if Grant's death was written...
C/O AMC: Gary kills Grant in a drunken rage, blocking out the memory. Meanwhile, Cindy is accused of his murder,
and goes to trial. While talking to Felicia, Gary confesses his crime to her when he remembers, as she's his AA
sponser. Torn between revealing Gary as the killer and letting Cindy stew for what she did to Lorna years before,
Felicia finally tells the authorities what happened, and Cindy is released.
C/O B&B: Grant is severely injured, but survives long enough to murmur someone's name -- Jake's name. Jake
is arrested and charged with Grant's murder, and hires private investigators to uncover who really did it. During
the course of the investigation, the PI uncovers evidence leading to one of Grant's former step-children (either
Alli or Steven) as the killer, and Jake is willing to go to any lengths to protect them, even sacrifice himself.
C/O DOOL: After Grant is murdered, Paulina is blamed, because of the blackmail information he had on her past.
She goes to trial, where everyone and their dog suddenly starts confessing to the crime. Even Tito, to protect
the woman he is beginning to think of as his mother, tries to claim he did it. It is only through a fluke, and
sudden recall by a then-drunken Gary, that leads the police to suspect a new culprit...Margaret Allen! It turns
out that Sparky's leading assistant was actually working with Grant to get Sparky to bring forth Justine's spirit
from it's new home...Jasmine's body!
C/O Y&R: Grant is murdered, and the only witness to the crime sees Jake McKinnon at the scene. No one else
was seen, so Jake is arraigned. After being convicted and sent to prison, Vicky is unwilling to give up on her
husband, and continues to search for the truth. She discovers that the killer was really Paulina, who had gone
to see Grant to beg him to leave Joe alone. Grant, of course, refused, and taunted Paulina with her past until,
in a psychotic rage, Paulina accidentally killed him.
AW in
the Ratings
Unfortunately, AW wasn't able to hold on to it's ratings upper. For the
week of March 1st through 5th, AW dropped to 2.4 from the previous week's ratings of 2.7. AW isn't the only show
that dropped though -- all the shows dropped at least .1 in the ratings.
Saving
AW from the Chopping Block
NBC has put up a special soap poll at their site. You can access the
poll itself at http://anotherworld.nbc.com, but if that address gives you trouble, go to NBC's homepage at http://www.nbc.com.
Towards the bottom of the page, there's a link for the poll. Look carefully though -- it's so small, it's really
easy to miss. The poll seems to be just a tad sexist -- I had some male friends fill it out, and the poll only
lasts about two minutes. But when I filled it out, and then had a number of my other friends fill it out, it took
us between five and ten minutes, because they ask females in their 20s and 30s a lot more questions.
There is a "Save AW" rally set for April 24, 1999, which coincides with the AW Fan Club Luncheon (note:
the rally is not being organized by the fan club). The rally will be held in front of NBC’s "Today Show"
studio window in Manhattan while the program is being taped. If you want to participate, be in from of Rockefeller
Center studio on Saturday, April 24, 1999, between 7:00 and 9:00 am. Remember to bring your protest signs! It’s
currently estimated that over a hundred online fans are expected to show up. Neither NBC nor P&G had any comment.
There are some places to go on the Net for information on saving AW. There is an AW petition at http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/5102/savingaw.html,
and Lucky121@webtv.net is helping to organize an AW rally (if someone knows whether or not it's the rally on April
24th, could you let me know?). Both are run by fans, and as far as I know, neither are official, nor are they affiliated
with the Another World Fan Club.
Daytime
Emmys
Recently the soap nominations for the daytime Emmys were announced. AW
was left completely out in the cold, receiving a grand total of zero votes. The votes were pretty much split between
AMC, GH, and Y&R. I've listed the nominees for each category, and their show. The name in brackets at the end
is who I would consider as having a decent shot. In regards to younger actor, I seriously wish someone would explain
to me how one of those particular people got on the list. This person shouldn't even be acting, let alone up for
an award. I'm guessing there weren't too many choices. The Emmys will air from New York on May 21, 1999.

Dead
Hamster Award of the Week
This week’s dead hamster award goes to...Josie Watts Sinclair! She never
once stopped to think that they would TEST Gary and the baby before just giving the kid his blood. Even if Josie
and Gary were both A-, there is STILL a chance that their child could have been O-. But what does she do? Blurts
out the truth about the baby right there. No sugar-coating, no preparation, just, "Sorry, honey, but your
brother and I did the Boca bonk, and the baby's not yours." I'm thinking I should create a special award --
"Most Insensitive Idiot of the Century".
Rants
& Raves
*NOTE: This week's rants and raves are brought to you c/o AW Online recaps,
Dustin's AW Page, and Laura's Transcript Archives -- I didn't SEE AW thanks to technical difficulties on my end,
but I was able to READ about it.*
Rants: I can't drum up even a smidgeon of interest in the "Jake & Vicky Get Grant" storyline. It's
not because I'm not trying. I am. I really am. But I have gotten so sick and tired of seeing Jake portray the stereotypical
angry white male, and Vicky as the fanatically obsessed stalker is a little old. I'm not a big fan of the couple,
I admit it, but maybe that's because they had NEVER been happy for more than three minutes without someone or something
coming between them. And what's with Etta Mae? Is she truly so desperate for help that she'll hire back Tito because
she "needs a manager"? Someone PLEASE tell me that she fired him after he took off on her right after
begging for his job back. Amanda, dump the chump. He lied to you, cheated on you, cuckolded his brother, lied to
his brother, lied to the world, committed medical fraud, and is basically an all-round wuss. Could someone please
unhitch Lila's lips from Cass'? I understand that they're madly in love, but have they forgotten that it's Lila's
husband's house they're making out in? Talk about tacky. Josie's dumber than a brick. When Gary said, "We're
you raped?", she should have just said, "Yes!" Then she could have suggested testing other people,
and hoping one of them would be a match. Actually, she SHOULD have kept her mouth shut, and there wouldn't have
BEEN a problem.
Raves: Sergei is fabulous! Aside from my mental love affair with this man's hair, he is keeping me in stitches.
I love the relationship between him and Felicia -- it's somewhere between friend-friend and mother-son. I don't
want those two romantically involved though -- I'd rather see them as extremely good friends, maybe something like
Felicia and Cass. I did love the way he called her Felishka -- a beautiful use by AW of a Russian endearment. It
was great to see Nick this week! I don't like the way they're basically turning him into public enemy #1, but he
still brightens my day. Putting him in a scene with Tito and leaving that annoying Remychik out of it (well, for
a few seconds at least) was the highlight of the week. I hate to have to say this, especially considering how much
I tend to complain about Lumina, but they were another of the high points of my week. I actually LIKE Sparky's
flashbacks to Amalie, even if I do hate the fact that he'll soon be celebrating something in the realm of 240 years
on this planet. And "David" and Alli get along so well! It's great to see someone paying SOME attention
to Alli -- no one but David seems to have said two words to her since the wedding. I really like Fiona Davis as
Dr. Doyle! Maybe AW would consider keeping her character at least on recurring basis -- she could minister to everyone's
problems on the show.
Special Thanks from Scully
I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who offered to
help me out by taping last week's eps for me. I had over a hundred responses by the end of the week, and I just
want to say thank you to each and every person that responded. Because of the generosity of a wonderful AW fan
(DD through YaHoo!), I will be able to see Sharlene, which I have waited for ever since she left. ;) And now my
VCR is fixed (both of them, actually), and I'm typing this up while listening to "Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night
II" on my earphones. The ultimate in cheesy Canadian B horror movies!
