Front Burner: Bombs Away for MarLie?

MarLie is bragging to Vic about how close she and Jake are getting, and how he's ready to forget all about her (Vic), but Vic tells her Jake's lying. This flips the already-gone MarLie out even more, because deep down, there's one tiny part of MarLie's psyche that hasn't flown off to Never-Never Land, and she knows Vic's telling the truth, and she knows that her plan could never work, because she could never be truly happy if Vic was no longer in her life. After Donna tells Jake that she's pretty sure MarLie is subletting the basement where her father held her hostage when she was pregnant with the completely unidentical in every way identical twins, Jake kicks it into high gear, arriving at the Love basement to find...nothing? Vic's pleading had encouraged MarLie to take her sister to a doctor (I still say Cindy could've helped her), but Joe had sealed off the roads leading out of town. MarLie needs to take Vic SOMEwhere, and ends up on the roof of a building, threatening to kill both of them. Joe and Jake can't believe she's willing to go to those lengths!

Jake talks her out of it by constantly reminding her of the past, and MarLie agrees to let him take Vic to the hospital (AKA. The MarLie Free Zone). She tells Jake how much she loves him, then tearfully watches the ambulance carrying them rush off to the hospital. Then she turns back to the matter at hand, and prepares to jump. Sure, MarLie's lost all her animal crackers, but there's still a little chunk of one left. All she wanted was for Jake to be happy (preferably with her), and she knows that her life can never go back to the way it was again. Fear not, though -- MarLie's not going to end up another statistic. She will pay for her crimes, but it looks like she's not finished with her underhanded shenanigans. Jake would like to make MarLie pay for everything she's done, but Vic begs him not to. Sure, MarLie's a fruitcake, but she's their fruitcake. Vic isn't ready to give up on her sister yet, and even though MarLie almost killed her (more than once), Vic is ready to forgive and forget...and even more ready to ask why. As for MarLie, she's stuck taking legal advice from Tyrone, while waiting to see who will stand by her in her hour of need.

Side Burner #1: A Placebo Pure Morning

True lust blossoms this week as Cameron proposes marriage to the mother of his child! No, wait...Cameron proposes marriage to the mother of his child's step-sister. (Anyone else think that just sounds funny?) Amanda, of course, agrees, and they make the announcement to all and sundry, including Brava investor David Halliday (AKA. Jordan Stark, AKA Sparky). Poor Sparky has a bad reaction -- his face literally falls off, leaving his true self showing. (I'm assuming no one sees this.) But he's not out of the game yet. Later Sparky overhears Cameron and Dozie talking about the baby (can we elect these two for the AW's dumb as a box of hair award of the year?), which they do constantly despite their repetitive promises not to ever mention it again, and he starts formulating a plan to rival C/Am's wedding plans. (With Sparky's track record, my money's on his plan succeeding.) While Gary is asking Cameron some shocking questions, Zak is being treated to a never-seen-before side of his boss. And if poor Amanda's not in for enough of a blow, what with Sparky deciding to woo her, and Cameron fathering his ditzy sister-in-law's child, Alli shows up in town, and she's none too happy about her mother's relationship with a man who spent ten years in prison for murder. (A fact no one but the viewers seems to remember these days.)

Side Burner #2: Two for Tea and Tea for Two...

While Felicia is waiting for her Russian prince charming to blow into town, she's stuck giving Cass "advice for the love lunatics". He tells her he's determined to win Lila's love for himself, forgetting all about that little adultery clause that can be found in most child custody agreements. Luckily, Rachel has lent Mate the Cory brain for the day (she seems to have had it for the last two years), and he has discovered that Lila is in love with Cass. Of course, he blames this all on Cass (in Bay City, it only takes ONE to tango), and he and Cass start screeching at each other again. Why Matt is so concerned I have no idea -- up until a couple months ago, his plan was to take that child away from Lila and never see her or worry about her again.

Back Burner: Whatever Happened to Baby Cantrell?

Nick is getting closer to learning the truth about Remy and Tito's relationship, but Remy diverts his attention by accusing Tito of some sort of crime. Unfortunately, if Tito's ball of yarn starts unraveling in the wrong places, this could destroy Remy and Paulina's relationship, because Paulina is getting closer and closer to her "son", "Tim". Things will hit the fan in the future, though, because "Tim" isn't the only secret Paulina's been keeping.

Rumors, Anyone?

Can it be? Will one of the McKinnons soon return to the fold? I received an e-mail from someone claiming to have an NBC source who said that by the time summer rolls around, one of the McKinnons will have returned home to roost. There is no confirmation available anywhere for this rumor, unless we count two other rumors that have recently surfaced (Goutman saying that McKinnons would be returning, and another saying that they were trying to lure back a former fan favorite), so it's not likely this will happen. Keep your fingers crossed though -- Jake needs more to do than just wait at home for Vic all day.

Other rumors place Lorna Devon's whereabouts in 1999 in Bay City. Lorna left some time ago, fearing that Cindy meant to kill her. Now that Cindy's not the biggest nut on the show (that award goes to MarLie), would Lorna find a way back to her mother? A couple rumors have intimated that Matt Crane made re-hiring Robin Christopher a condition of his return. Sure, that's cheap, but I'd love to see Felicia reunited with her only child. (I don't count her adopted daughter Jenna, since adoptions mean nothing in Bay City.)

*** NOTE *** Rumors are purely 100% rumor, and have absolutely no valid confirmation, which is why they're rumors. ***

Casting News

Poor Steve Richard Harris! Since Sofia was dumped from the recast shelf, there seems to be no real purpose for Zak. (Like there ever truly was?) So unfortunately for Harris, who if I recall correctly is the father of a baby daughter Casey born shortly after he joined the show, he has been bumped to recurring status. If he's lucky, they'll pull a Mortimer with him -- Mark Mortimer was put on recurring after his contract ran out, but was back on contract status within a couple weeks.

Don't forget to set your VCR! January 8th is supposed to be Alicia Leigh Willis' first airdate, as well as her acting debut. The only previous roles this actress has had are, as far as I can discern, teeny tiny virtually non-existant guest shots. My vote is that she's a bubbly blonde with a chip on her shoulder the size of that huge spaceship from "ID4". If she's not pregnant within the year, we'll never see her, since soaps never write storylines for teenagers unless they can work romance in somehow. Who's she going to romance, Tito? He's the only male on the show under 24 (Nick). Too bad they think he's her cousin...

Life After AW

Although it's not on AW, "As the World Turns" fans will get a glimpse of a former AW actress. Orlagh Cassidy, who played the role of Sloane Cassidy (a KBAY worker) from 1992 to 1993, will be playing Annie on January 6th. I'm assuming it's a one day thing.

At least one AW actor will be having a good time this fall. Diego Serrano (the former Tomas Rivera) will be making his prime-time debut this fall in a new soap opera entitled "Time of Your Life", opposite Jennifer Love Hewitt. "Time of Your Life" is slated to start in the fall of 1999, and is supposed to be a spin-off of Hewitt's successful soap "Party of Five". If you were lucky, you may have also caught Serrano's guest spot on "The Dennis Rodman Hour" (AKA. "S.O.F. Special Ops Force") in September or October. This is one ex-daytime star that is getting some great breaks.

Although both Les Brandt (ex-Rafael Santierro) and Ricky Paull Goldin (ex-Dean Frame) apparently tried out for the role of Tony Viscardi on Y&R (recently exitted by Nick Scotti), but neither won the part. Also up for the part was "The City"'s George Palermo (Tony), but there's as yet no official word on who was cast -- only who wasn't.

Rants & Raves

Raves: Oh, how I'm loving this Sparky storyline. Sure, the sci-fi mumbo-jumbo is slightly more irritating than discovering the dentist gave you laughing gas instead of knockout gas before yanking teeth out, but hey, it's kind of cute. Sparky is showing himself to be a pseudo-likeable character. I WANT to know about his past. I WANT to see Sparky find happiness. I WANT Sparky with Amanda, because the C/Am pairing is making me cry. I love that Nick is getting more airtime, and that they've finally agreed to take the character's brain out of storage. Tito has his ups and downs, but generally, I love this character. He's a self-centered little brat with a chip on his shoulder who thinks the world owes him something. He's the most realistic early twenties character the show has had in years. I would love to see him open his heart up to his "mother", and realise that there are people in the world that are good.

Rants: Someone just kill Dozie. Please. I hope Stenovitch has a long and happy career, but I don't want that character on AW for even one more week. How much lower can this character sink? I'm waiting for her to suddenly decide that once the baby is born, Cameron can't even be it's uncle, and that they have to name the child after Gary and cut off all ties with Cameron. Vic's still kidnapped, but I can deal with that. My VCR control has a fast-forward button. What's REALLY driving me nuts is the Matt/Lila/Cass thing. I think Lila and Cass are dripping chemistry, and make a fabulous couple, but I also think that Cass needs to get his head out from...you know where...and tell Lila to put up, or shut up. He says he's not going to hang around like some pathetic lap dog, but what is he doing with his time? And oh, how I miss Jeff Phillips...I really liked him as Matt. (I know, I'm alone in that.) Anyone else notice how incredibly selfish Paulina is being in this "Tim" thing? Not once has she asked "Tim" how his real family is, and how they feel about this. (At least, not to my knowledge.) Bad enough she's got a marriage built on lies, dishonesty, and distrust -- does she want her relationship with her "son" to be the same?

AW in the Ratings

AW's average ratings for this year were a full point less than their average ratings two years ago. This doesn't bode well for the show, or for Goutman's tenure as executive producer.

AW Cancelled?

Recently the Internet has been abuzz yet again with rumors of an AW cancellation. "Doris", who claimed to be an NBC worker, recently posted her "official cancellation" news on the MediaDomain messageboard. Don't worry, folks -- as yet, there is no official cancellation word from NBC. But there's a good chance NBC may not want to go with a four-soap line-up, and it's a foregone conclusion that AW's the show on the chopping block. This is a great time for all AW fans everywhere to start writing NBC and tell them how much you like the show. NBC doesn't accept unsolicited script ideas (copyright problems), but I'm sure they'd be open to any advice that the fans can give on improving the show. Just remember -- nothing is ever final until the fat lady sings, unless you're a low-rated Canadian action/comedy with John Woo's name in the title. The address I can find for AW is:

Sad News for Television Fans

Although she never appeared on "Another World", there are few television fans who don't know who Michelle Thomas is. Most fans would probably remember her as Myra Monkhouse, Steve Urkel's obsessive girlfriend on "Family Matters", but Y&R fans know her as Callie, a 1998 invention who came to town with a yen to reconnect with childhood friend Malcolm Winters. She also starred in both mini-series invections of "The Last Don", as well as a couple of questionable movies in the mid-1990's, and was recently nominated for an NAACP Image Award. On December 22, 1998, the actress passed away, with stomach cancer being the cause. She was twenty-nine. She had left her Y&R role earlier in the year, citing medical problems, but her death was a shock to her friends and colleagues. No word yet on a memorial service, but assumably it will take place in either New York or New Jersey. For more information on cancer or what the average person can do to increase awareness and the chance for a cure, please visit the official site of the American Cancer Society (http://www.cancer.org).
