Front Burner: A Christmas Cory

Cam takes Mandy to the place they first met, and proposes marriage. Mandy agrees. She still doesn't know the truth about the baby, but Dozie convinced Cam that Mandy would never understand and would hate him for it. He is head over heels in love with Mandy, and doesn't want to lose her. Besides, he's moved on. So what if he cuckolded his brother and impregnated his sister in law. The truth WILL out, though, and it may have a surprising source. Will Sparky have his hand in more than just Cory politics? In other Dozie news, we learn that Toni and Chris have been asked to be the baby's god-parents.

Meanwhile, Cass and Lila are sending off sparks between themselves. Mate is starting to catch on, and begins realizing his wife is in lust with Cass just as she is ready to admit it to Cass. What's Mate going to do about this problem? And why is it that every woman Mate married is an older dark-haired woman lusting after another man? And his girlfriends are usually fair-haired schemers who belong in the psych ward?

Lila manages to get everyone out of the Cory household so that Sparky can check out the Cory family history, but she misses one person -- Mandy. (I thought Mandy had moved out -- she only seems to have scenes with Cam these days.) Sparky manages to conceal himself, but is shaken when Mandy makes a motion that reminds him of the woman he lost. He knows he's getting closer to that woman, and decides that Mandy, and not Rachel, is the woman he is searching for. Because of his scars and disfigurements, he believes Mandy could never accept "Jordan Stark", so he magically morphs himself into "David Halliday", and introduces himself as Brava's investment partner just in time to attend Lila's New Year's Eve party. He's stunned when he learns that Cam and Mandy are engaged, and is in danger of being found out as Sparky. He decides that he will do whatever necessary to break them up. How could the woman he loved more than anything marry someone else?

Side Burner: Dazed and Confused

In a fever-induced haze, Vic "sees" Bridget. Later, Donna realizes that she knows where MarLie is holding Vicky. Jake and Tyrone race against time to find Vicky, but will they find her in time? She's getting sicker and sicker, and her life is going to be put in terrible danger. Vic's not the only one getting sicker though -- MarLie's mental state is rapidly deteriorating. She is desperate to get Vicky the medication she needs to live, and equally as desperate to force Cindy into helping her throw Joe off track when he starts digging further into Grant's shooting. It doesn't help that her conscience is kicking into high gear.

Back Burner: Mommie Dearest

"Tim" and Paulina agree to take a DNA test, and Tito has to come up with a way to con Paulina. Will he con Remy the same way? Later, Tito and Remy go out, and Tito takes advantage of this to try to create problems between her and Nick. Meanwhile, Paulina is struggling to accept "Tim" as her son -- it just doesn't feel right to her.

A Look at 1999

Sparky is going to be integrally involved in a number of Bay City story lines, but not AS Sparky. Like Cass with Crystal Lake, Sparky will create an alter-ego for himself as David Halliday, a man who is charming, urbane, and sophisticated. He's attempting to woo Mandy, and get her away from Cam. Question though...if Sparky is so psychic, why doesn't he just divine the truth about Dozie's little nipper and somehow have Mandy find out? Or hypnotize Cam into telling her? His plans will put Mandy in danger. Look for more of Sparky's past memories to play a big role in 1999. He's also decided Cass is Bay City's answer to the devil, and is determined to win over him. Cass, of course, has his own problems -- Lila has realized she's in love with him, but there's a snag -- Mate seems to be truly falling for his bride. Will she give her body to her husband, but her soul to Cass? Cass will continue to lament his loveless life with Felicia, but Felicia's got something of her own going on -- a desperate Russian "artiste" who needs a green card. He's romantic, eccentric, and smart as a whip -- a young, male version of Felicia. (PLEASE don't let them give him a hokey fake Russian accent. If I can buy movies where everyone in Germany speaks accented English all the time even to each other, I can buy Sergei with perfect locution.) There is as yet no word on the name of Alice Barrett Mitchell's new character, but look for this new person (who will not be a reincarnation of Frankie according to NBC) to shake things up in Bay City.

In other Cory news, it turns out that "Tim" isn't the only secret that Paulina kept from Joe. Tito will continue to pretend to be Paulina's long-lost son (like Remy won't eventually clue in?), but there is a secret in Paulina's past that will damage her relationship with Joe even more than introducing her 22-yr-old long-lost child -- a secret that is somehow connected to Grant. Grant, meanwhile, had lost his son back to Vicky, who finally manages to make it out of the Love basement. (Hallelujah!) But MarLie's not gone from Bay City for good. Even though her secrets have all been revealed, Vicky is desperate to discover what happened to her sister, who's going to be spending a little time in the psych ward. (If it's the psych ward at BCGH, she'll probably join John on his fishing trip -- no one EVER comes home from BCGH except Grant.) To keep with the "ex-lover's of Grant" theme, Mandy's in for a shocker in February. It looks like someone will finally get around to revealing the truth about Dozie's pregnancy. This storyline will come to a head during February sweeps, and it looks like one of the couples will be finished for good. (My bet is on Gary and Dozie. If he doesn't dump her after finding out, Gary's finished in my books.) Even if Cam and Mandy do make it through this, though, there are things more powerful than Sparky or Dozie's bun -- Alli doesn't want her mother and Cam together, and may go to great lengths to see that it doesn't happen.

Casting News

As you have probably heard by now, Alice Barrett Mitchell is returning to her old acting home. Barrett Mitchell played one of the most beloved and memorable characters of the 1990's, Mary Frances Frame Ordway Winthrop (AKA Frankie) from 1989 until 1996, when she was let go to make room for other actors. If viewers were looking for a Frankie return, they will be sadly disappointed -- Barrett Mitchell will be creating an entirely new character. Rumor has it that the fact that Barrett Mitchell played Frankie will be as unmentioned as the fact that Robert Kelker-Kelly previously played one of the Sam Fowlers, but no one in Bay City even noticed.

January 8th is the day to set your VCR's for to test out the new Alli. Alicia Leigh Willis is making her acting debut playing the now-teenaged Alli. So far, all anyone might have caught Willis in is as some walk-on guest shots on a few comedic series', but now AW fans will get to be the first to experience this new actress. I haven't yet seen a picture, but I'd bet she's blonde. Whenever they change Mandys, they usually change Allis to match (Tucci's Mandy's daughter was a brunette, Moss' Mandy's daughter was a redhead, etc).

I finally figured out who Dr. Hale is -- the head of the baby-napping ring is being played by actor Jim Shanklin. I'm still hoping he'll be the one to expose Dozie's secret. After all, she's perfectly happy ruining everyone's lives with it. ;)

Rants & Raves

Rant: Marlena in the well. Oh, sorry, Vicky in the cave. Oh, sorry, Marlena in the secret room. Oh, sorry, Vicky in the Love basement. Anyone else noticing parallels? I’m having DOOL flashbacks to when Stella Lombard had Marlena Evans trapped in the well for 1992’s Thanksgiving. By the end of that storyline, I honestly didn’t care if Marlena lived or died, as long as they moved on. I’m getting there with Vicky too. At least I LIKE Vicky. Marlena…well, my hope was for death. Would have saved me four more years of pain and Marlena the Gasping Doctor. Good news though – I know why Vicky is sick. She hasn’t brushed her teeth, washed her hair, changed her clothes, or gone to the bathroom in over a month. She probably has that Black Plague thing that killed a bunch of Englishmen years ago. And sheesh, is this "Tim’s adoption" story hokey and unbelievable.

Raves: Kudos to Goutman on rehiring Barrett Mitchell, and double kudos for not giving us a cheap Frankie reincarnation. I’ll give him triple kudos if it turns out better than Sam/Shobby. And if he makes the character someone I care about, then I will start up a new religion worshipping Goutman. I can’t wait to see what NuAlli is like, but I was really impressed with Lohan, so she’ll be a hard act to follow. But Willis is a newbie, so if she takes awhile to improve, she’s got it. I loved the Christmas fantasies (which are airing here today -- same with everywhere else?), even if they were "Leave it to Beaver" meets "The Twilight Zone".And I love all this Sparky stuff. It’s been awhile since I truly cared about a "new" character on the show, and I really DO want to know about this little guy.

In Other AW News

On December 14, 1998, there was a "Men of Bay City" photo shoot at the studio. Wardrobe credit goes to both The Gap and Banana Republic, and the resulting photographs will be used for their promotions, as well as on-air promotions for AW, and there's a good chance that someone will FINALLY update the opening credits.

AW in the Ratings

AW is holding steady at 2.3. Will Barrett Mitchell's return in February raise the ratings?
